Spending in Wisconsin Claimed 21.7% of Income

State and local government expenditures in Wisconsin were 21.7% of state personal income in 2006, 5% more than the U.S. average (20.6%) and 22nd highest among the states. Per capita, spending here was $7,114 (18th) vs. a national average of $7,171. These figures released today by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) were based on new fiscal 2006 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Although Wisconsin’s tax burden rose from 12.1% to 12.3% of personal income, new Census figures for 2006 show the state’s 50-state ranking dipped out of the top ten for the first time since 1980, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX), a nonpartisan, public-policy research firm.

School and Tech College Tax Hikes Lead Way

WISTAX Estimates Statewide Property Tax Increases of About 4.0%

Statewide, 2008-09 property tax levies are up 5.2% for schools, 5.0% for technical colleges, and 3.1% for counties, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX). If municipal and related taxes rise 3.5%, as WISTAX estimates, total gross property taxes, before state tax credits, would rise about 4.3%.

School children across the state are receiving report cards, and the state of Wisconsin is getting one, too, thanks to a "competitiveness benchmarking" project at the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to public-policy research and citizen education. The goal of the project, done on behalf of Competitive Wisconsin, Inc. (a consortium of state business, farm, and labor leaders), has been to gauge the change in the state’s competitive position over time and to compare it to surrounding states and the U.S.

Wisconsin Spent 8.5% More Than U.S. to Operate Schools

Per Student Salaries Near Parity, Benefits Exceed U.S. Norm by 50%

U.S. Census figures released this month showed that Wisconsin spent $10,190 per pupil to operate public schools in 2006. A new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) analyzed these data in greater detail and found that school expenditures here ranked 14th highest among the states and 8.5% above the U.S. average ($9,390). The main reason for the above-average ranking was fringe benefits that exceeded national averages by more than 50%.
