Wisconsin Spent 8.5% More Than U.S. to Operate Schools

Per Student Salaries Near Parity, Benefits Exceed U.S. Norm by 50%

U.S. Census figures released this month showed that Wisconsin spent $10,190 per pupil to operate public schools in 2006. A new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) analyzed these data in greater detail and found that school expenditures here ranked 14th highest among the states and 8.5% above the U.S. average ($9,390). The main reason for the above-average ranking was fringe benefits that exceeded national averages by more than 50%.

"Unlike most states, which amassed major surpluses in recent years, Wisconsin has little with which to withstand a recession," a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) finds. The nonpartisan public policy research group reports that, while state governments around the country have combined 2007-08 surpluses of almost $46 billion, Wisconsin may be facing a $400-million revenue shortfall with only $124 million in reserve.

Statewide Property Values Up 3.0% for 2016

Preliminary Figures Show Statewide Totals Still Trail Pre-Recession Peak

The total value of taxable Wisconsin properties rose a modest 3.0% this year to $505.1 billion. However, they have still not reached their pre-recession peak recorded in 2008.
