Wisconsin Government Employment Per Capita 8.2% Smaller Than U.S. Average

Wisconsin had 8.2% fewer state and local government employees per capita than the national average in 2008. The state had 50.35 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees for every 1,000 state residents vs. 54.82 for the U.S. and ranked 41st nationally, according to a new study from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX). The study, “Wisconsin’s Public Workforce,” details public employment and pay using 2008 Census figures, the most recent available.

Wisconsin Loses 4.3% of Business Establishments in 2006-09

Wisconsin had 6,700, or 4.3%, fewer private businesses in early 2009 than it did at the same time in 2006, according to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX). The first-quarter statistics�"from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics�"were part of a WISTAX review of various "state of the state" measures early in the new year.

Municipal Fee Growth Outpaces Property Taxes

Municipal fees increased almost twice as fast as property taxes (80.7% vs. 42.3%) from 2000 to 2007, according to a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX), titled "Municipal Fees and Charges."  In 2007, fee collections (excluding utility charges) accounted for 8.6% of city and village revenues, up from 6.8% in 2000.

Net GPR Spending Up 1.5%, While All-Funds Expenditures up over 10% in 2009-11 State Budget

MADISON—With increasing use of non-GPR (general purpose revenue) dollars to pay for general fund spending, confusion reigns over how much state spending is up in the 2009-11 biennium. Net GPR will increase 1.5% from 2007-09 actual spending amounts, while all-funds expenditures will increase more than 10% from 2007-09 actual spending amounts. In total, Wisconsin state government plans to spend $62.19 billion over the 2009-11 biennium. These findings are in a new Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) report titled “State Budget 2009-11: Ins, Outs, Ups, and Downs.”

Federal, State, and Local Tax Collections from Wisconsin Fell 12.4% in 2009

MADISON— Federal, state, and local tax collections in 2009 totalled $61.2 billion, down from $69.9 billion in 2008. Taxes claimed 28.8% of total state personal income, their smallest share in over four decades. These figures are found in a new report from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) titled “2009 in Review: Total Wisconsin Taxes.”
