MADISON—Wisconsin room tax collections total nearly $70 million annually, yet little is known about how those funds are spent. State law requires, with some exceptions, a percentage of room taxes be used for tourism promotion and development efforts, though, use of funds is determined locally. Public School Staff Numbers Fall For Third Consecutive Year

MADISON—The number of teachers in Wisconsin public schools fell 2.4% in 2012, continuing a sharp three-year decline that began in 2010. However, individual district experience varied widely—from relatively large gains to double-digit losses—depending in part on enrollment and fringe benefit changes. Two new reports from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) show that, while statewide staffing numbers were down in 2012, districts with growing enrollments and large savings on employee benefit costs savings often added teachers, while declining enrollment districts with little or no benefit savings were among the hardest hit. Now celebrating its 80th year, WISTAX is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to policy research and citizen education.

MADISON—Wisconsin’s per capita income rose 4.8% in 2011, the largest increase in five years. That is one of the bright spots in the state’s new report card, “Measuring Success: Benchmarks for a Competitive Wisconsin,” prepared annually by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) for Competitive Wisconsin, Inc. (CWI).
