MADISON— For every dollar state taxpayers send to Madison, 67¢ goes to local governments, schools, and property taxpayers, and not to running state agencies and programs. “This is a ‘silver bullet’ that explains much about public finance in Wisconsin and why government here is different from most states,” observes Todd A. Wisconsin School Spending Outpaced Most States During Recession

MADISON— Despite the recession and resulting school aid cuts, Wisconsin’s K-12 school spending per pupil rose 2.6% in 2009-10, compared to 1.1% for the nation. Spending here averaged $11,364 per student, 17th highest nationally and 7.1% more than the national average ($10,615), according to a new report, “The states and school spending in a recession,” from the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX).
