MADISON— U.S. Census figures released Wednesday show that state-local taxes in Wisconsin claimed 11.7% of personal income in fiscal 2010 (2009-10), ninth highest among the states, the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX) reported today. During the prior year, Wisconsin taxes claimed 11.2% of income, and were also ninth highest. WISTAX is a nonpartisan, nonprofit policy research organization dedicated to citizen education.

Most Wisconsin High School Graduates Not Prepared for College

Minority Students Lag Significantly

MADISON—Only 31% of Wisconsin’s 2012 high school graduates are prepared to succeed in four common courses taken by college freshman, according to ACT, the Iowa testing firm. Minorities fared worse, with only 3% of African-Americans and 13% of Hispanics college-ready in the four courses. A new report by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX), "College and career readiness need work," reviews ACT’s evaluation of student performance in 2012. Statewide, School District Reserves Continue to Climb

Though Some Districts See Falling Fund Balances

MADISON— Total school district surpluses in Wisconsin reached $1.86 billion at the end of the 2010-11 school year, according to a new report from the nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance (WISTAX).

This continues an upward trend that began in 2003, when those combined "fund balances" stood at $1.20 billion. Since then, districts have increased their combined reserves an average of 5.6% per year. They rose 6.1%, from $1.76 billion to $1.86 billion, during 2011.
